Before this happened | And then there was
Bree is one of the nicest people I've met. I also loved her debut book, The Dark Divine. I also can't wait to read the sequel, The Lost Saint.Feel free to visit bree on Twitter or her site.
Random Questions:
What's your favorite Tree?
Apricot tree. I grew up in a neighborhood that was built on an old apricot orchard so my yard was full and Iof huge apricot trees. I spent most of my early childhood up in their branches.
What's your favorite pie?
Caramel Apple Pie--like the kind Grace makes in TDD.
What's your favorite type of tea?
I don't drink real tea, but I enjoy the Tazzo's herbal Passion tea. So yummy.
What's your TV guilty pleasure?
I think all my TV is probably a guilty pleasure. I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Vampire Diaries, Friday Night Lights, Veronica Mars, 30 Rock, Cougar Town, Modern Family, and so many more. But my current obsession is Avatar: The Last Airbender (the cartoon, not the movie). I love this just as much as my kids do, and we always end up watching a couple of episodes together every day. They have totally figured out that if they ask to watch it, I can't say no. I've decided to start my own Team Zuko campaign.
What is your biggest guilty pleasure (i.e. food, music, movie, etc)?
Chocolate. Especially chocolate ice-cream. Dairy makes me sick, but I still can't stay away from a rich chocolate ice-cream.
Who is your celebrity Crush?
Does a cartoon character count? If so, Prince Zuko. If not, then I'd say Taylor Kitsch from Friday Night Lights.
What is currently inspiring you,musically?
Vampire Weekend. I've played the song "Giving Up the Gun" countless times while writing THE LOST SAINT.
What's the last movie you watched?
Inception. I had no desire to see this from the previews, but it was totally awesome.
What's the last book you read?
Last book I finished was MATCHED by Ally Condie. I'm currently reading THE DARK DAYS OF HAMBURGER HALPIN by Josh Berk.
If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Today, I'd say teleportation. I love to travel but I am getting really sick of riding on planes so much lately.
If you could be any food, what would you be?
A ghirardelli double chocolate brownie. But then again, I may be tempted to each myself.
Serious Questions:
What is your motivation/inspiration for doing what you do?
Mostly, I just love to tell stories and I'm blown away by the idea that somebody will pay me money to do what I love doing the most. But also, when I was a kid, I used to look up authors on the library computer and think how cool it would be to see my name there--or for my kids/grandchildren to see it. I've always been fascinated with the idea of leaving part of myself behind for them when I die--and a book would be much better received than, like, a pinky-toe.
What or who has been the biggest inspiration in your life?
My husband. He believes in me so whole-heartedly that it helps me believe in myself.
What are your long term goals (where would you like to end up, professionally)?
My hope is that my books will continue to be well received enough that publishers and readers will want me to keep writing them.
What inspired the characters created?
A conversation between a brother and a sister that popped into my head one night. The brother was warning his sister to stay away from a dangerous ex-friend who had suddenly returned to their town. I couldn't shake the conversation and the emotions these two were going through so I started writing their story.
Are you a plotter or a pantser and why does this work for you?
I used to be a pantser before I was published, but now that I have a publisher and a multi-book contract, they make me outline the plots of my books so they can approve them before I start writing. It was a hard adjustment to make, but I'm getting used to the idea of working with an outline. It's nice that I can work out plot issues my editor might have before I write the whole darn book. And they still put up with me deviating a bit from the outline if something comes up while I'm writing that I hadn't anticipated in the outline.
Of all the major characters in your novel, which would you most like to converse with after the events of your book have taken place and why/ what would you say?
I'd want Daniel to sit down and tell me his version of the plot from his POV. He's got a lot going on inside his head.
If someone who resembled one of your characters stopped by your house asking to use your phone, what would you do?
Ask him/her to pose for a picture with me and then post it on Twitter ASAP.

Reader questions:
You had the paranormal hints in the story, but what made you decide on werewolves?
Haha. It was actually mom's idea. I was telling her about the idea I had for the story and the different characteristics that I wanted my "monster" in my book to have, and my mom suddenly said, "Oh, like werewolves?" I didn't think that was the right choice at first, but once I started toying with idea, it became clear that it was the perfect choice.
Your take on werewolves, was it something you had come across on research, your own spin on the idea, or both?
Both. I like to take old ideas and put my own twist on them. The inspiration for my twist came from a historical account of a man who was accused of being a werewolf by his town in the 1600s. The man was put on trial (kind of like the Salem witch trials) but instead of insisting that he wasn't a werewolf, he claimed that he was indeed a werewolf, but that nobody understood what a werewolf truly was. He claimed to be one of "God's Dogs" and that his job was to protect the town from demons. The judge let the man go with only a fine instead of a stoning. I thought this was a really cool account, and I took this 2 sentence account and expanded upon it in order to developed a whole mythology for my book.
Possible SPOILER questions for TLS:
Don't say I didn't give you fair warning!
Where did Jude go at the end of The Dark Divine? Can you give us any hints?
Jude wandered for a while by himself, but wolves don't like to be alone. They want to be in a pack or a "family" of sorts--so consider that a hint as to what Jude's been up to.
Is The Lost Saint all in Grace's perspective or do we possibly get to see some of Daniel's or Jude's perspectives?
There's a tiny bit from Jude's POV, but Grace is still the main POV character.
